Astronomy Kits for GCSE Courses

These kits of lenses are intended for those who are studying an astronomy course and who wish to make a small astronomical telescope as part of their practical coursework.

Also, these kits of lenses are suitable for those keen amateur astronomers who wish to build their own small telescope, perhaps as a finder telescope to mount on a larger instrument.

K. 1 Lens kit for a small telescope

The kit consists of:

  • A 50mm diameter achromatic objective lens with a focal length of 7″.
  • A pair of singlet lenses, suitable for making a Ramsden – type eyepiece.

(Sometimes we may be able to offer different lenses, depending upon availability.)

This kit is intended for those people who are studying Astronomy as a GCSE course, in which they are required to build a small telescope as part of the coursework.

The kit is supplied with a four-page information leaflet about how to: find the focal length of a lens; use the lenses to make a telescope; find a telescope’s apparent field of view; find a telescope’s true field of view and find the telescope’s magnification.

Price: £23.00

K. 1B Lens kit for a small telescope Specially useful for schools and colleges

The kit consists of:

  • A 40mm diameter achromatic objective lens with a focal length of 7″.
  • A pair of singlet lenses, suitable for making a Ramsden – type eyepiece.

This kit is especially useful for school or college use because the 40 mm diameter objective lens fits neatly to the white plastic pipe that is sold in D.I.Y. shops for waste plumbing, so the student can use a piece of plumbing pipe to make a sturdy telescope.

It is important to remember that the white plastic pipe will need to be lined with a non-reflective material such as black cartridge paper.

K. 2 Lens kit for a small telescope

The kit consists of:

  • A 50mm diameter achromatic objective lens with a focal length of 7″. (Sometimes we may be able to offer an achromatic objective lens with a different focal length, depending upon availability.)
  • A pair of achromatic doublet lenses, suitable for making a Plossl eyepiece. These achromatic lenses give superior colour purity and less distortion at the extreme edges of the field of view.

Again, this kit is intended for those people who are studying Astronomy as a GCSE course, in which they are required to build a small telescope as part of the coursework. This version will also make a high-quality finder-scope for an astronomer’s main telescope.

The kit is supplied with a four-page information leaflet about how to: find the focal length of a lens; use the lenses to make a telescope; find a telescope’s apparent field of view; find a telescope’s true field of view and find the telescope’s magnification.
